Voice Calls

Let AI make and receive phone calls. Close more deals with voice automation.

AI can:

Requirements

  1. Vapi Account — Sign up at vapi.ai
  2. Vapi API Key — From your Vapi dashboard
  3. Phone Number — Provisioned through Vapi
  4. Voice Credits — 5 Rocket Agents credits per call + Vapi usage

Setup Guide

Step 1: Create Vapi Account

  1. Go to vapi.ai
  2. Sign up for an account
  3. Complete onboarding

Step 2: Get Your API Key

  1. Go to Vapi Dashboard
  2. Navigate to Settings → API Keys
  3. Create or copy your API key

Step 3: Connect to Rocket Agents

  1. Go to SettingsVoice Calls
  2. Enter your Vapi API key
  3. Click Connect
  4. Test the connection

Step 4: Configure Voice Settings

Step 5: Get a Phone Number

  1. In Vapi dashboard, go to Phone Numbers
  2. Purchase a number
  3. Configure it for your Rocket Agents assistant

Using Voice in Outreach

Voice-Only Mode

Set your agent to Voice Only:

  1. Go to Agent Settings → Outreach Mode
  2. Select "Voice Only"
  3. AI will only make phone calls

Use voice as escalation after SMS/Email:

Email (Day 1)

    │ No response

SMS (Day 2-3)

    │ No response

Voice Call (Day 4+)  ← Final escalation

Configure in Escalation Settings.

Call Flow Example

AI: "Hi, this is [Agent] from [Company]. Is this [Lead Name]?"
Lead: "Yes, speaking."
AI: "Great! I'm following up on your inquiry about [interest].
     Do you have a few minutes to chat?"
Lead: "Sure, I was looking for..."
[AI qualifies, answers questions, books meeting]
AI: "Perfect, I've sent you a calendar invite for Tuesday at 2pm.
     Anything else I can help with?"

Viewing Call History

All calls appear in the conversation thread:

  1. Open the lead
  2. See voice calls in the timeline
  3. Click View Transcript for full text
  4. Click Play Recording (if enabled)

Call Details Shown

  • Call duration
  • Call status (completed, missed, voicemail)
  • Full transcript
  • Actions taken (meeting booked, etc.)
  • AI confidence score

Costs

Voice calls have two cost components:

Best Practices

When to Use Voice

  • High-value leads — Worth the extra cost
  • No response to text — Escalation after SMS/email
  • Complex conversations — When text is limiting
  • Urgent follow-ups — Time-sensitive situations

When to Avoid Voice

  • Cold outreach — Can feel invasive
  • Simple questions — SMS is faster
  • Low-value leads — Not cost-effective

Optimize Your Script

  1. Keep your business context detailed
  2. Include common questions/answers
  3. Add objection handling
  4. Specify when to escalate to human

FAQs

"Do I need my own Vapi account?" Yes. Voice calls use Vapi's infrastructure. You need your own account and API key.

"How much do calls cost?" 5 Rocket Agents credits + Vapi per-minute charges. See Vapi pricing.

"Can AI leave voicemails?" Yes. Configure voicemail behavior in Vapi settings.

"Are calls recorded?" Optional. Enable in voice settings. Check local laws on call recording.

"Can I listen to calls?" Yes, if recording is enabled. Find recordings in the conversation thread.

"What if the lead asks something AI doesn't know?" AI will acknowledge and offer to have you follow up, or transfer to you if configured.

"Can AI transfer calls to me?" Yes. Configure transfer settings in Vapi for warm handoffs.

"What voices are available?" Multiple options — male, female, various accents. Configure in voice settings.

"Does AI sound robotic?" No. Vapi uses advanced AI voices that sound natural and conversational.

"Can leads call my AI back?" Yes, if you configure inbound handling on your Vapi number.


Troubleshooting

Call Not Connecting

  • Check Vapi account has credits
  • Verify phone number is active
  • Confirm API key is correct

Poor Call Quality

  • Check Vapi status page
  • Verify lead's phone number is valid
  • Try different times of day

AI Not Following Script

  • Add more context to your agent
  • Be more specific about handling scenarios
  • Check conversation history for patterns
